বাংলা ভাষায় বিভিন্ন রকমের গল্প রয়েছে, যাদের নামকরণের মূল কারণ হয়, তাদের আকার আর তাদের পরিবেশন করার পদ্ধতি। যেখানে উপন্যাস হলো মূলধারার বাংলা গল্প পরিবেশন, সেখানে তার থেকে আকারে অনেকটাই ছোটো গল্পগুলিকে ছোটোগল্প নামকরণ করা হয়।

এই ছোটগল্পের বৈশিষ্ট্য বা চারিত্রিক গুণাবলি বিচার করতে গেলে, উপন্যাসকেই ধারণা করে, তার সাথে তুলনা করতে হয়। যেখানে উপন্যাস আকারে বৃহৎ হয়, এবং তাতে থাকে প্রচুর চরিত্র, থাকে একাধিক পটভূমি এবং একাধিক ক্ষেত্র, সেখানে ছোটগল্প সাধারণত গুটিকয়েক চরিত্র, দুই-তিনটি দৃশ্য ও ক্ষেত্র নিয়েই গঠিত হয়, আর তাই আকারেও তা অনেকটাই ছোটো হয়।

এছাড়াও, একটি উপন্যাসকে সরাসরি ভৌতিক বা প্রেমের, বা এই রকম কনো বিভাগে চিহ্নিত করে দিতে পারা যায়না। প্রতিটি উপন্যাসেই যেমন কিছু প্রেমের প্রসঙ্গ থাকে, তেমন ইইছু ভৌতিক বা রূপকথার আবহাওয়াও থাকে, আবার তেমনই কিছু রহস্য বা এডভেঞ্চারও থাকে। এঁদের মধ্যে যেটি অধিক থাকে একটি উপন্যাসে, বা যাকে মূল ধারা ধরে নেওয়া যেতে পারে একটি উপন্যাসে, সেই অনুসারে একটি উপন্যাসকে রহস্য উপন্যাস বা রোমাঞ্চ উপন্যাস বা সেইরূপ নাম দেওয়া হয়।

কিন্তু একটি ছোটোগল্প চারিত্রিক ভাবে ভিন্ন হয়। অধিকাংশ ছোটোগল্প একটিই ধারা কেন্দ্রিক হয়ে থাকে। যদি তা ভৌতিক হয়, তবে ভৌতিকই হয়, যার মধ্যে প্রেম বা রোমাঞ্চের কেবলই রেশ বা লেশ থাকে। বাংলা ছোটোগল্প সঙ্কলনের মধ্যে যোগদান অনেকের থাকলেও, প্রথম যার নাম স্মরণ আসে এই বিষয়ে, তিনি হলেন ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর মহাশয়। মূলত পৌরাণিক ধারাপাতকে ধারণ করে হলেও, ইনি ছোটোগল্পকে একটি বিশেষ মর্যাদা প্রদান করেন, যাকে বিস্তারিত আকারে ও বহুল সংখ্যায় পরিবেশন করেন কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর।

পরবর্তীকালে শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় মহাশয়ও ছোটোগল্পের উপর কাজ করলে, অনেক অনেক লেখক সাহিত্যিক ছোটোগল্পকে গ্রহণ করে নিয়ে বিবিধ গল্প সাহিত্য বাংলা ভাষাকে উপহার করেছেন। এখানে যেই ছোটোগল্পগুলি পরিবেশন করা হলো, তা সমস্তই মৃষু সমর্পনানন্দ দ্বারা রচিত, যেই নাম তাঁর নিজের গ্রহণ করা ছদ্মনাম নয়, বরং তাঁর সাধকোচিত নামকরণ হয়েছিল এই নামে।

There are many types of Bengali Story books, majority of which are named after the style and pattern of narrating the stories through the books. The major and the oldest form of narrating Bengali Stories is through the Novels. However, as time passed by, there remained only few authors to create a Novel, mainly for the size of those stories, and otherwise for the vastness that those novels include. Therefrom the concept of Bengali Short Stories evolved and flourished, both among the authors and also among the readers.

These Bengali Short Stories are much different from that of Novels, but when you try out to know the characteristics of the Novels, you need to first analyze the Novels only, as they form the base of Bengali Story Books. While Novels are bigger in size, contains loads of characters, consists of decade plots, and forms complex executions, Bengali Short Stories are simpler, smaller, contains lesser numbers of characters and includes least number of plots with simple execution.

Moreover, while you will find that novel will bear no particular widen dimension as Horror Novel, Investigative Novel, Adventure novel and they contain all types of features in them. Out of those, the feature that is projected in that novel mostly is referred as the category type for that novel. That is not the case with Bengali Short Stories. In this type of Bengali Story Books, you will find a particular dimension in terms of features and in rare cases, you will observe a mix of multiple features in one short story.

Initially, when the number of authors and readers, both were less, literatures in Bengali language were mainly presented in the form of Novels. However, with time, for the big size and vastness of Novels, they were cut short to Bengali Short Stories, and the initiative in that approach was taken from the mighty Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. Later on, although preference of authors remained concentrated at Novels, but for the liking of the readers, majority of the Bengali authors started concentrating on the short stories, where role of the great poet, Rabindranath Tagore was impeccable.

Rapidly readers started showing inclination to this particular segment of Bengali Story Books, and henceforth with that popularity of Bengali Short Stories, many authors came up to enrich Bengali Literature and thereby Bengali stories gained immense popularity, which is still residing with the natives of the same, around the globe. The Short stories presented in this site are all authored by Mrishu Samarpananda, which is not any pseudonym of the author, but it is the name attained by him, for the sake of his spiritual acclaims.
